Safety Not Guaranteed Review

Last minute yesterday my sister and I decided to go see "Safety Not Guaranteed," instead of "Rock of Ages," and I could not be happier we made that decision. The concept from the movie came from an actual real life person putting in an ad stating that he is going to go back in time and would like someone to join him, bring your weapons, safety is not guaranteed. This ad aired on Jay Leno and the producer's of the movie took that 150 word add or less and turned it into an absolutely brilliant script and in turn a brilliant movie. The cast includes the likes of Aubrey Plaza who plays the lead (Darius) and Jake Johnson (Jeff) from New Girl, and newcomer Karan Soni (Arnau) and finally the lead Mark Duplass (Kenneth). The movie starts with Darius showing us a look in her past, her struggles in college and high school, which brings the audience to where she has left off. Interning at a magazine in Seattle, and trying to work at a restaurant for spare cash. Jeff who is a reporter for the Seattle Magazine finds this Ad and thinks he can come up with a good article by going and speaking with Kenneth who lives in Ocean View. Jeff ends up taking with him Darius and Arnau the interns with him to Ocean View. Turns out Jeff had a different idea of what they would be doing, more like what he would be doing and that is hooking up with a past fling that he used to visit in Ocean View on spring breaks with his family. This leads to Arnau and Darius taking a lead on this article, Darius finds out where he works and some other info on him. Jeff then uses that information and finds Kenneth, starts explaining to him that he would be the perfect guy to go with on this Time Travel adventure, Kenneth is not interested, asks him simple questions such as have you ever experienced fear, questions of that nature. Instead of giving up Darius takes it upon herself to meet with him again of course with Darius being the awkward girl she is get's right along with what seems to be crazy Kenneth. As the movie progresses Darius start's to understand why Kenneth wants to go back revealing that she would go back to save her mother from going to get her chocolate milk which essentially lead to her mother's death, and Kenneth in turn felt comfortable to tell her the same. They form a love relationship, and their are twists and turns as the movie moves along, but the simplicity of their new found love, and the simple concept of wanting to go back in time and change one thing you regret really sticks through out the movie. It ends with no conclusion I suppose we are supposed to assume they went back in time, but I don't think what the movie is actually about. In the beginning of the movie the audience is stressed several times that Darius has never been in love, and isn't happy. The movie concludes with her being happy and also in love. Not just happy because she found love, but happy that she accomplished something that she worked hard to achieve. It seems that movies these days try to hard to be too complicated, and this movie really brought back the idea of being simple and falling in love with complicated characters. More importantly being able to relate to them. All four character go through an obstacle within the movie, some end happy and some end not so happy such as Jeff's character realizing he is kinda stuck where he is with nothing really to look forward to. This in mind it prove's yet again that their doesn't need to be a conclusion, and we can come up with are own.
